Industrial Hygiene Program
Industrial hygiene is devoted to the recognition, evaluation,
and control of those environmental factors or stresses arising
in, or from, the workplace that may cause sickness, impaired
health and well-being, or significant discomfort among workers
or among the people of the community.
EQUATE's Industrial Hygiene Program is designed to protect the
health and safety of our employees, contractors and visitors
from health hazards that arise as a result of, or during, work.
There are three steps in the protection of the health and safety
of EQUATE employees:
- Recognition of health hazards
- Evaluation of health hazards
- Control of health hazards
Once a hazard is recognised, evaluation measures are taken,
which include monitoring and sampling. It is then possible to
control the health hazard and prevent any possible injuries.
This can be achieved in one of three ways:
- Engineering controls are used as the first line of defence
against workplace hazards wherever feasible. Silencers are
good examples of engineering controls and they can be installed
on things such as steam vents to reduce noise levels to acceptable
limits.
- Administrative controls are used to control employees' exposure
to hazardous environments by scheduling reduced work times
in an area.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is used when it is not
feasible to control health hazards by applying engineering
or administrative controls.
Through the combination of these efforts, we are able to ensure
the safety of our workers, visitors and the community.
