Ethylene
Glycol
The ethylene glycol unit has a capacity of 400,000 tonnes per
year. Combining Union Carbide's advanced METEOR™ process
and EQUATE's world-class supply chain management, we are the
supplier of choice for ethylene glycol in the markets we serve.
Ethylene glycol is a primary constituent in polyester fibre,
which is the highest volume synthetic textile fibre produced.
Polyester is widely used by virtue of its diversity and flexibility
when used on its own or in combination with natural fibres such
as cotton or wool. Polyester is also of importance in industrial
applications, such as for example its use in automotive tyres,
seats and seat belts.
Polyester film's essential properties have made it the material
of choice for audio, video, photographic and magnetic recording
film as well as packaging film, boil-in-the-bag pouches, electrical
insulation and wrap, tapes and foils, and miscellaneous applications
such as decals, labels and overhead projector transparencies.
Polyester container resins (PET) have numerous proven advantages
over glass and other plastics for packaging. PET containers
are both lighter and more durable than glass, in addition to
which PET containers have superior performance properties and
superior clarity.
Additionally, EG is widely used in the manufacturing of automotive
antifreeze.
