Kuwait – 2 October 2014 — EQUATE Petrochemical Company, Kuwait’s first private sector petrochemical company, inaugurated its petrochemical plant at Kidzania Kuwait, making it the world’s first petrochemical company to participate in KidZania.

During the inauguration, EQUATE President & CEO Mohammad Husain said, “Sustainability, in all forms within and outside Kuwait, holds great significance to EQUATE, as it has through its EQUATE Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Program sponsored and launched many sustainable initiatives in various medical, professional, industrial, environmental and educational sectors. EQUATE has established sustainable partnerships with several local and global entities from public and private sectors to achieve development and progress within an overall framework of innovation and creativity through the efforts of human resources that represent the most important element of success for nations, companies and all organizations. Therefore, forming this partnership between EQUATE and M.H. Alshaya Co. is an embodiment of our tagline ‘Partners in Success’ by allowing children to delve into some parts of engineering relevant to petrochemical plants with their processes, guidelines and regulations through integrating education with entertainment within an environment of amusing culture. All of which are aimed at developing the future’s engineers and other qualified individuals.”

On his part, Vice President of Leisure & Entertainment at M.H. Alshaya Co. Fernando Medroa said, “Our new partnership with Equate, a leader in the petrochemical industry in Kuwait, is of great value to KidZnaia, as it will further support our continuous mission to provide children with a full-fledged edutainment city that combines fun and education in one destination.” He added, “In this establishment, children get to role-play as petrochemical engineers, while learning and experiencing first-hand how tiny plastic pellets are turned into useful products that we see and use every day.”

In addition to Husain and Medora, the inauguration was attended by EQUATE VP for Technical Services & Head of EQUATE CSR Team Mohammad Al Benali, as well a number of leaders and employees from EQUATE and M.H. Alshaya Co.

In line with KidZania Kuwait’s unique blend of education and entertainment, children will commence their intriguing role-play journey as petrochemical engineers and carry on their roles after reviewing EQUATE’s environment, health and safety requirements, as well as fun educational videos on the source and use of raw material. In addition, they will receive a brief introduction about EQUATE, the basic principles of the petrochemical industry and how to convert Ethylene into pellets that are manufactured into plastic products we use in our daily lives, such as bags, containers and wrapping material. As part of the applied education at EQUATE’s plant in Kidzania, the children will then collect the pellets and run them through a machine to affirm their compliance with clarity and quality standards, followed by converting the pellets into a plastic object that they can use in education and entertainment. Finally, for their efforts of working at EQUATE’s plant in KidZania Kuwait, the children will be rewarded with a salary in kidZos, KidZania’s currency.

Established in 1995, EQUATE is an international joint venture between Petrochemical Industries Company (PIC), The Dow Chemical Company (Dow), Boubyan Petrochemical Company (BPC) and Qurain Petrochemical Industries Company (QPIC). Commencing production in 1997, EQUATE is the single operator of a fully integrated world-scale manufacturing facility producing over 5 million tons annually of high-quality petrochemical products which are marketed throughout the Middle East, Asia, Africa and Europe. www.equate.com

KidZania Kuwait officially opened its doors to children across Kuwait on 17 June 2013. Since then hundreds of visitors come to the kid-sized city every day to enjoy the various educational and entertaining activities at their own city, located at the Mall – The Avenues. KidZania Kuwait is a 7,000 square meter area designed as a children sized-city to entertain and educate children up to 14 years old. The child-sized metropolis functions just like a real one, offering kids and visitors an exceptional experience in a safe and secure environment where they can engage in about 100 activities and role-play more than 80 professions, such as doctor, firefighter, pilot and many more.

About KidZania:

Much more than a children’s museum or family entertainment center, KidZania takes interactive entertainment and learning to an entirely new level by combining role-playing with real life. KidZania creates a children-centric city experience designed to educate and inspire 4 to 14-year olds – from arriving at the airport, to visiting a city center to exploring the city streets. We replicate the real world in a safe and self-contained over 7,000 square meter children-sized city. As in the real world, children choose activities – such as being a police officer, doctor, journalist or a shopkeeper – and earn money which they can then spend or save. KidZania operates just like a real city complete with buildings, paved streets, vehicles, a functioning economy and recognizable destinations in the form of “establishments” sponsored and branded by leading multi-national and local brands. The facilities are designed to educate through experience, fostering the development of life skills, but from a children perspective – it’s all about fun.

KidZania, Inc., headquartered in Mexico, is privately held. This award-winning concept is recognized globally for its unique blend of entertainment and education for children. The first KidZania opened in Mexico City in 1999. There are ten other locations including, Monterrey (Mexico); Tokyo, Jakarta, Koshien, Lisbon, Dubai, Seoul, Kuala Lumpur, Cuicuilco (Mexico) and Santiago (Chile), Bangkok, Mumbai, Cairo, and Istanbul. To date, more than 20 million kids and parents have visited the facilities globally. The trajectory continues with 10 facilities in development, including locations in Jeddah, São Paulo, Moscow, London and the United States.
